Overview
About Sagarika Government Emporium
Sagarika is the government emporium, and its value is straightforward: fixed prices and legitimate provenance. Shell craft, carved padauk, cane and bamboo work, pearl and shell jewellery, coconut craft and a small range of local spices and honey, all clearly priced with no haggling and no pressure.
That matters more here than in most places. Some marine curios sold informally in the islands come from protected species, and taking those out is an offence under Indian wildlife law — the kind that gets found at airport security. Buying at the emporium takes that risk off the table.
The craft itself is good. Padauk, the islands' deep red hardwood, turns and carves beautifully, and the better pieces in here are properly finished. Shell inlay work and cane furniture are the other things worth carrying home.
Twenty minutes to half an hour is enough, and every Port Blair city tour includes it as the shopping stop.

Travel tips
- Do not buy coral, turtle shell or protected-species curios anywhere, at any price. It is illegal to carry them.
- Keep the bill — it is what proves provenance at airport security.
- Prices are fixed here, so use it to calibrate before browsing the private shops.
- Padauk is heavy. Weigh the piece against your baggage allowance before you fall in love with it.
