Overview
About Samudrika Naval Marine Museum
If you visit one museum in Port Blair, make it this one. Samudrika is operated by the Indian Navy and it is organised the way a naval briefing is: five galleries, each answering one question, in an order that actually builds. Geography first — how a submerged mountain range became five hundred islands. Then the people, then the archaeology, then the marine environment, then the corals.
The marine life and coral galleries are the reason to come before you snorkel rather than after. Preserved specimens, reef models and clear labelling mean that when you are floating over Elephant Beach three days later you can name what you are looking at instead of just enjoying the colours. The shell and coral collections are extensive, and the section on reef damage — bleaching, anchor scarring, the 2004 tsunami — is unusually frank for a government museum.
There is a small aquarium at the end with live reef species, and a preserved skeleton of a blue whale that washed up in the islands, which is the exhibit every child in the building is standing under.
It is compact — an hour covers it comfortably, ninety minutes if you read everything — and it sits in the Naval base area at Delanipur, close to the town centre and easy to pair with the Anthropological Museum in the same afternoon.
