Varanasi

The spiritual capital of India. Ancient ghats, sacred temples, and the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti.

Overview

About Varanasi

Varanasi is among the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, and it does not present itself gently. The old city is a lattice of lanes too narrow for cars, opening without warning onto the ghats — the broad stone stairs that run for some six kilometres along the western bank of the Ganges.

Life on those steps is entirely public. People bathe, wash clothes, teach, sell chai, wrestle, sleep and are cremated within a few hundred metres of one another. For many Hindus, to die in Kashi is to be released from the cycle of rebirth, and the city has organised itself around that belief for centuries.

Most visitors settle into a rhythm within a day: on the water at first light when the ghats face the sunrise, out of the heat through the middle of the day, and back at Dashashwamedh by evening for the aarti. Two or three nights is enough to feel it; a week is not too much.

Climate & Seasons Guide

The comfortable monthsOctober – March

Warm days, genuinely cold mornings in December and January. This is when to come. Dev Deepawali in November lights the entire riverfront with oil lamps — extraordinary, and extremely crowded.

Very hotApril – June

Temperatures push past 40°C and the middle of the day is unusable. Early mornings and evenings still work if you plan around them.

MonsoonJuly – September

The river rises, sometimes swallowing the lower ghats entirely, and boating is restricted when the current runs hard. Green, dramatic and cheap.

Know Before You Go

Essential Travel Guidelines

  • Dress modestly. Shoulders and knees covered is the right call at temples and on the ghats.
  • Do not photograph the cremation grounds at Manikarnika or Harishchandra, and do not accept a paid 'tour' of them.
  • Agree the price before a boat leaves the step, and confirm whether it is per person or per boat.
  • Shoes come off at temples. Wear something you can slip on and off easily.
  • Guides who approach you on the ghats are rarely licensed. Arrange one through your hotel or with us.
  • The lanes flood with people on festival evenings. If you dislike crowds, watch the aarti from a boat.
