Fisheries Museum (Rajiv Gandhi Aquarium)

Three hundred and fifty species, most of them from these waters

Overview

About Fisheries Museum (Rajiv Gandhi Aquarium)

The Fisheries Museum — most people call it the Rajiv Gandhi Aquarium — is small, slightly old-fashioned and genuinely useful. Its collection runs to roughly 350 species drawn from the waters around the islands and the Indian coast: reef fish, sharks, rays, sea snakes, corals, sponges, shells and a few preserved specimens that are more curiosity than exhibit.

It works best as a twenty-minute companion to Samudrika rather than a destination in itself. Where Samudrika explains the reef system, this gives you the species list at eye level, which is exactly what children want and exactly what makes a first snorkel more interesting.

Its location helps. It sits on the waterfront near Marina Park and the Water Sports Complex, so it slots naturally into an afternoon that ends with sunset on the promenade or a boat back from Ross Island.

Do not expect a modern aquarium. Tanks are basic and the lighting is what it is. Priced accordingly, and worth the half hour.
