Shimla

The summer capital of the Raj. A pedestrian Mall Road, a Gothic church on the Ridge, and a toy train up to it.

Overview

About Shimla

Shimla was the summer capital of British India from 1864 to 1947, which is a strange thing for a Himalayan ridge town to have been, and it explains almost everything about how it looks: the mock-Tudor timbering, the Gothic church on the Ridge, the Viceregal Lodge sitting on Observatory Hill like a Scottish country house that took a wrong turn.

The core of a visit is small and pedestrian. The Ridge and Mall Road run along the top of the town with no vehicles on them, and you can walk the whole thing in half an hour — which most people then do again every evening, because that is what Shimla is for. Below the Mall the town is a genuine working city of two hundred thousand people, steep, congested and not particularly picturesque, and the gap between the two is worth knowing about in advance.

Two nights suits most people; three if you want Kufri and Chail without rushing. It is also the easiest hill station in India to reach — overnight train to Kalka, then the narrow gauge, and you are on the Ridge by lunchtime.

Climate & Seasons Guide

PeakMarch – June

Temp: 12–25°C · Sea:

Pleasant days, cold evenings, and the town at its fullest. May and June rates run 40–60% above the rest of the year.

MonsoonJuly – September

Temp: 15–22°C · Sea:

Heavy cloud, real rain, and the odd road closure on the Kalka highway. Cheap, green, and not the week to plan photographs.

ClearestOctober – November

Temp: 5–20°C · Sea:

Sharp air, snow peaks visible from the Ridge, thin crowds. The best value weeks in the calendar.

WinterDecember – February

Temp: −2 to 10°C · Sea:

Cold, occasionally snowbound, and lovely when it lands. Kufri holds snow more reliably than the town does.

Travel Logistics

How You Reach Shimla

01

By train

Overnight from Delhi to Kalka, then the narrow gauge Himalayan Queen or Shivalik Express up to Shimla. Book the toy train several weeks ahead — it sells out well before the mainline does.

02

By air

Chandigarh is the practical choice, four hours by road. Shimla's own airstrip at Jubbarhatti handles small aircraft only and cancels often.

03

By road

Delhi to Shimla is about 350 km and eight hours, overnight Volvo or private cab. The last 90 km from Solan is the winding part.

Know Before You Go

Essential Travel Guidelines

  • Vehicles cannot reach the Mall. Hotels near the Ridge mean a porter and a short climb with your bags — worth it, but know it before you book.
  • The lift on Cart Road connects the lower town to the Mall for a few rupees and saves a hard climb. Locals use it constantly; visitors rarely find it.
  • Wear shoes with grip in winter. The Ridge ices over and it is a polished stone surface.
  • Leave nothing in your hands at Jakhoo Temple. The monkeys take glasses and phones, and the temple staff will retrieve them for a fee.
  • Book the toy train the moment your dates are fixed. It is the one component here that genuinely sells out.
  • Kufri is a different place before ten in the morning. After that it is horses, queues and coach parties.

Two covers the town and one excursion comfortably. Three lets you add Kufri and Chail without a rushed morning. More than three and most people start wanting to move on to Manali.
