Jodhpur

The Blue City. Mehrangarh on its rock, and an indigo old town packed in underneath it.

Overview

About Jodhpur

Jodhpur was founded in 1459 when Rao Jodha moved the Marwar capital to a sandstone outcrop rising a hundred and twenty metres out of the plain, and Mehrangarh has stood on that rock ever since. It was never taken by siege, it is still owned by the family that built it, and the museum inside it is the best-run in Rajasthan by a distance.

Underneath the fort the old city is painted blue. The usual explanation involves Brahmin households and a copper sulphate wash against termites; the honest answer is that nobody is quite certain how it started and the whole quarter now does it. Seen from the ramparts at the right hour it is one of the few sights in India that genuinely looks like the photograph.

Two nights is right. The fort and Jaswant Thada take a morning, the blue lanes and the clock tower market an afternoon, and the second day goes to Mandore, the Bishnoi villages or the desert temples at Osian — all of which get skipped by itineraries that treat Jodhpur as a stop between Jaipur and Jaisalmer.

Mehrangarh and the blue lanes underneath it are a full day. What fills a second is the country outside the city.

An 1899 marble cenotaph for Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, with screens carved thin enough to glow when the sun is behind them. A garden, a small lake, and very few people.

  • Built 1899
  • Translucent marble screens
  • 10 min from the fort
Umaid Bhawan PalacePartial access

What most itineraries skip because they are already driving to Jaisalmer. Any of these turns a stopover into a stay.

Some rain, briefly green, sharply cheaper. Humid rather than hot, and the fort in cloud is a different building.

Travel Logistics

How You Reach Jodhpur

01

By air

Jodhpur airport is five kilometres from the centre, with direct flights from Delhi and Mumbai. It is a shared civil-military field, so security is strict and photography outside is not allowed.

02

By train

Well connected to Delhi, Jaipur and Ahmedabad. The overnight Jodhpur–Jaisalmer service is the best way to do that leg and saves a full day of driving.

03

By road

Five and a half hours from Jaipur, five from Udaipur — and the Udaipur road is the one to take via Ranakpur and Kumbhalgarh rather than direct.

Know Before You Go

Essential Travel Guidelines

  • Give Mehrangarh three hours, not one. Most itineraries under-book it and guests come out annoyed.
  • The audio guide at Mehrangarh is included with the ticket and is genuinely excellent. Take it even if you have hired a guide.
  • The blue lanes are a maze. Either take a guide or accept that you will come out somewhere unexpected.
  • Umaid Bhawan Palace is part hotel, part royal residence, part museum — only the museum and grounds are open to non-residents. Set expectations accordingly.
  • Try the mirchi bada and the makhaniya lassi at the clock tower. Both are Jodhpur things and neither travels.
  • Desert nights get cold from December to February. If you are doing Osian or a camp, pack a jacket.
  • Do not photograph near the airport perimeter — it is a military field and the rule is enforced.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Two nights. One is enough for Mehrangarh and Jaswant Thada if you are passing through, but it means skipping the blue lanes at sunrise and everything outside the city, which is most of what makes Jodhpur worth stopping in rather than driving past.
