Jaipur

The Pink City. A planned eighteenth-century grid, forts along the ridge above it, and the best bazaars in the state.

Overview

About Jaipur

Jaipur was founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II, who was an astronomer before he was a king, and it shows: the old city was laid out on a nine-block grid to a written treatise, with streets of fixed width and a wall around the whole thing. It is one of the earliest planned cities in India and the only one where you can still see the plan working.

The pink came later — 1876, when the city was washed terracotta for a visit by the Prince of Wales, and the colour stuck by law. What that means for a visitor is that the walled city photographs as a single object rather than a collection of buildings, and that Hawa Mahal at sunrise is genuinely worth the alarm.

Two nights is the standard and it is enough: forts and Amber on one day, the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and the bazaars on the other. A third night buys you Ranthambore as a long day trip, or simply time to shop properly, which in Jaipur is a real activity rather than a filler.

Top Places to Visit in Jaipur

Jaipur splits neatly into the walled city on the plain and the forts on the ridge above it. Plan a day for each and the trip works.

On the grid, on foot

The walled city

Everything inside the pink wall, laid out on Jai Singh's nine-block plan. A day here, mostly walking, with a rickshaw between the far corners.

Hawa Mahal

A five-storey honeycomb screen of 953 windows on the main bazaar street, built for the women of the court to watch processions unseen. Shallower than it looks — it is essentially a facade.

The forts on the ridge

Eleven kilometres north, three forts along the same Aravalli spine. A morning for Amber, an evening for Nahargarh, and Jaigarh in between if you have the appetite.

Warm days and cool evenings; December mornings can be genuinely cold. Everything is open, and the Literature Festival in January fills every hotel in the city.

42–45°C through May and June. Amber Fort at noon in that heat is not a good memory. Rates fall sharply, and mornings still work.

Green, humid, half-price and beautifully lit after rain. Teej in August is one of the best festivals in the city.

Travel Logistics

How You Reach Jaipur

01

By air

Jaipur International is 13 km from the walled city, with domestic flights from every metro and a handful of international routes.

02

By train

The Delhi–Jaipur Shatabdi takes about four and a half hours and is the civilised way to arrive. Overnight services run from Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

03

By road

Five hours from Delhi on the NH48, four to five from Agra. Both are good roads, and both are how the Golden Triangle is usually driven.

Know Before You Go

Essential Travel Guidelines

  • Amber before nine, City Palace after lunch. Reverse it and you spend the hottest hour of the day on an exposed ridge.
  • The composite monument ticket covers Amber, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Nahargarh and Albert Hall, and is worth it if you are doing three or more.
  • Elephant rides up to Amber are a welfare problem. We do not book them; a jeep goes up the same road.
  • Bargain in the bazaars — the first price is an opening position, not an insult to negotiate down from.
  • Gemstone 'investment' offers are a long-running scam aimed at tourists. Buy stones you like the look of, at a price you are happy to lose.
  • The Literature Festival in late January is wonderful and fills the city. Book months ahead or avoid that week entirely.
  • Chokhi Dhani is a staged village experience, and it is fun if you take it as that rather than as anything authentic.

Two nights is the standard and covers everything most people want: Amber and the ridge forts one day, the walled city the next. A third night is worth it if you want to shop seriously or take the long day trip out to Ranthambore.
