Udaipur

The City of Lakes. A palace grown along the shore for four centuries, and the best day trips in Rajasthan around it.

Overview

About Udaipur

Udaipur was founded in 1559 when Udai Singh II moved the Mewar capital out of Chittorgarh after the third and final sack of that fort, and he chose a valley with lakes in a state that mostly does not have any. That single decision is why Udaipur feels unlike anywhere else in Rajasthan — water instead of sand, hills instead of plains, and a palace that grew along the shore for four hundred years.

The centre is small. The City Palace, Jagdish Temple, Bagore ki Haveli and the ghats sit within a few hundred metres of each other on the east bank of Lake Pichola, and the whole old city is walkable if you accept the hills. Two nights covers it comfortably.

What people underestimate is the country around it. Kumbhalgarh's fort wall runs thirty-six kilometres over the hills eighty-odd kilometres north; Ranakpur's marble temple sits on the same road; Chittorgarh, the fort Udai Singh left, is two hours east. Any of the three justifies a day, and Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur pair neatly into one.

Climate & Seasons Guide

The seasonOctober – March

Temp: 10–28°C · Sea:

Warm days, cool nights, full lakes after a good monsoon. December and January are the busiest weeks and the ones to book early.

HotApril – June

Temp: 25–40°C · Sea:

Up to 40°C, though the lakes and the altitude make it noticeably softer than Jodhpur or Jaisalmer. Rates fall and the mornings still work.

Monsoon — the local favouriteJuly – September

Temp: 23–33°C · Sea:

The hills go green, the lakes fill, and the light is extraordinary. This is when Udaipur looks most like the postcard, and it is half price.

Know Before You Go

Essential Travel Guidelines

  • Take the boat late in the afternoon rather than at midday. Same lake, entirely different light, and the palace jetty queue is shorter.
  • Lake levels depend on the monsoon. After a weak one, Pichola can be low by April — worth asking us before booking a lake-view room at a premium.
  • Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur work as one long day out, or better, as stops on the drive to or from Jodhpur.
  • Ranakpur admits visitors from around noon; mornings are reserved for worship. Leather — belts and wallets included — is left at the gate.
  • Book Bagore ki Haveli's evening dance in advance in season, or arrive by 6:15 for a seat on the floor near the front.
  • The old city lanes are steep and partly stepped. A hotel described as 'lakeside' may still mean a climb with bags.
  • Sajjangarh is inside a sanctuary with a separate entry fee, and private vehicles stop at the gate — the shuttle up is included in the ticket.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is the most-booked honeymoon city in Rajasthan, and unlike some places that claim it, it earns it — a lake boat at sunset, palace hotels at every price level, and a compact old city you can walk in the evening. Our honeymoon quotes put you on the lake side rather than in the newer town.
