Gilded temples on the Chao Phraya, island days off Pattaya, and the easiest first passport stamp there is.

Overview

About Thailand

Thailand is the first trip abroad for more Indian travellers than anywhere else, and the reasons are practical rather than romantic: it is roughly four hours from Chennai and three and a half from Kolkata, the entry formalities are light, English is widely spoken in the tourist trade, and the rupee buys more once you land than it does in most of India. It is also one of the few places you can put a first-time flyer, a honeymoon couple and a family of eight on the same itinerary without compromise.

Bangkok is the arrival point and worth more than the two nights most itineraries give it. The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, the reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and Wat Arun's porcelain-tiled prang across the river are all within a short boat ride of each other on the Chao Phraya, with the Damnoen Saduak floating market an hour and a half west and Chatuchak's 15,000 stalls open at weekends.

Pattaya, about two hours south-east down the motorway, is what most packages pair with it: a bay, a working beach road, the Koh Larn islands twenty minutes offshore by speedboat, and a run of evening shows and gardens. It has a reputation, and part of it is earned — but the daytime Pattaya of Coral Island, the Sanctuary of Truth and Nong Nooch is a genuinely good family trip, and the two do not have to overlap. Beyond these, Phuket, Krabi and Phi Phi on the Andaman coast are a longer and quieter holiday that we quote separately.

Climate & Seasons Guide

Cool season — the best of itNovember – February

Temp: 24–32°C · Sea: Gulf calm, island trips run daily

Dry, 24–32°C and comfortably humid rather than punishing. Peak season, peak prices, and the only stretch you can walk the Bangkok temples in the middle of the day without suffering.

Hot seasonMarch – May

Temp: 28–36°C · Sea: Warm and calm on the Gulf side

Up to 36°C and very humid, with Songkran — the country-wide water fight that is Thai new year — around 13–15 April. Uncomfortable for sightseeing, excellent for the islands, and cheaper.

Green seasonJune – October

Temp: 26–33°C · Sea: Occasional swell; boat trips cancelled on rough days

Rain arrives as heavy afternoon downpours rather than all-day drizzle, so most days still have a usable morning. The lowest rates of the year, and the Gulf coast around Pattaya is less affected than the Andaman side.

Phuket, Krabi and Phi PhiAndaman coast note

The west coast runs on a different monsoon. November to April is its season; May to October brings real swell and some island trips stop altogether. Worth knowing if the trip is built around Phi Phi.

Travel Logistics

How You Reach Thailand

01

By air from South India

Direct to Bangkok from Chennai and Bengaluru in around four hours, with Suvarnabhumi (BKK) taking most full-service carriers and Don Mueang (DMK) the low-cost ones. Check which one your return leaves from — they are an hour apart across the city.

02

By air from elsewhere in India

Direct from Kolkata (about 3 h 30 m), Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Kolkata is the shortest hop to Bangkok from anywhere in India.

03

Bangkok to Pattaya

About 150 km on Motorway 7, roughly two hours by private transfer. We do this as a transfer rather than a day trip, so a Pattaya night is a Pattaya night rather than four hours in a van.

04

Around Bangkok

The BTS Skytrain and MRT are fast, cheap and air-conditioned, and beat a taxi at any hour of the working day. The Chao Phraya express boat is the sensible way to reach the temple cluster.

Know Before You Go

Essential Travel Guidelines

  • Confirm the visa position at the time you book. Indian passport holders currently enter visa-free for short stays, but Thailand reviews the arrangement periodically and we check it against the embassy before ticketing.
  • Temples enforce a dress code: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off inside. The Grand Palace turns people away at the gate, and the sarongs sold outside cost several times what they should.
  • Never say anything disrespectful about the monarchy, and do not damage or step on Thai banknotes or images of the King. Lèse-majesté is a serious criminal offence and is prosecuted.
  • Carry US dollars to exchange rather than rupees, and change money at a licensed booth like SuperRich rather than at the airport counters.
  • Ignore anyone on the street who tells you a temple is closed today and offers a tuk-tuk tour instead. It is the oldest scam in Bangkok and it ends at a gem shop.
  • Agree the jet ski or scooter's condition in writing and photograph it before you ride. Damage claims on hired vehicles are the most common complaint we hear back from Pattaya.
  • Buy travel insurance, and take it seriously — private hospital care in Thailand is excellent and is billed accordingly.
  • Tap water is not for drinking. Bottled water is everywhere and costs almost nothing.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

At present, no — short tourist stays are visa-free. Thailand has changed this arrangement more than once, so we confirm the current rule against the embassy before we ticket, and tell you what the position is on your travel dates rather than today's.
