Overview
Manali sits at 2,050 m at the head of the Kullu valley, where the Beas comes down out of the mountains and the road north climbs towards Lahaul. It has been a trekkers' and honeymooners' town for fifty years, and the two crowds have shaped it into something slightly split-personality: Mall Road with its woollens shops and cafés at one end, Old Manali's guesthouses and river noise a kilometre up the hill, and Vashisht with its hot springs across the water.
The town itself takes half a day. What people actually come for is above it — Solang for snow and paragliding, the Atal Tunnel through to Lahaul, Naggar's castle and the Roerich gallery down-valley, Manikaran's hot springs and gurudwara over in the Parvati valley. Plan Manali as a base with four or five day trips off it, not as a place you sightsee within.
The Atal Tunnel changed this trip more than anything else in the last decade. Before 2020, everything beyond Rohtang was seasonal and permit-bound. Now nine kilometres of tunnel put you in Sissu — a completely different, drier, more barren landscape — in about ten minutes, year round, with no paperwork at all.

In and around Manali
Manali is a base rather than a sight. Almost everything you came for is somewhere between twenty minutes and two hours up the valley.
Half a day, on foot
The Mall, Old Manali and Vashisht sit within a couple of kilometres of each other. This is the part of the trip that needs no vehicle.
Solang, the tunnel, Lahaul
North of town the road climbs fast. This is where the snow is, and where the day trips that sell the trip actually happen.
Naggar, Kullu, Manikaran
South of Manali the valley opens out. These are the trips that get booked on the day the weather closes the road north.

Best Time to Visit
Temp: 10–25°C · Sea:
The main season and the busiest. Solang is green and flying; the Mall is packed by late afternoon. May and June rates run well above the rest of the year.
Temp: 15–25°C · Sea:
The Chandigarh–Manali highway is landslide-prone in these months and does close. Rates fall hard. We will run it, but we will not commit to an arrival hour.
Temp: 5–20°C · Sea:
Clear, cold, empty and cheap, with the first snow appearing on the high passes. If you are not chasing snow at ground level, this is the window.
Temp: −5 to 10°C · Sea:
Solang and the tunnel mouth are reliably under snow; the town itself varies year to year. Roads occasionally close for a day after a heavy fall — keep a buffer before your flight.
Travel Logistics
The standard route. Delhi–Manali is 530 km and 12–14 hours by overnight Volvo or private cab; Chandigarh–Manali is 300 km and 8–9 hours. The stretch above Mandi is the winding one.
Bhuntar (Kullu) is 50 km away but is a single-runway strip that cancels readily in cloud, and a cancellation there costs a day. We normally quote Chandigarh and drive up.
Everything worth seeing needs a vehicle. We use Innova or Xylo class up to Solang and through the tunnel — smaller cars struggle on packed snow, and chains are not optional in January.
