Himachal Pradesh

Hill stations, deodar forest and the snow line, from Shimla's Raj-era Mall to the tunnel through to Lahaul.

Overview

About Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh runs from orchards at 600 metres in the Shivalik foothills to the cold desert of Spiti at over 4,000, and the difference between those two ends is not a matter of degree — it is a different holiday, a different season and a different vehicle. Almost everything sold as a 'Himachal tour' happens in the lower half: Shimla, Kullu and Manali, Dharamshala, Dalhousie. That is not a criticism. It is where the hotels, the roads and the reliable weather are.

The thing nobody tells you before booking is that Himachal is a driving holiday. Shimla to Manali is only about 250 km, but it is seven to eight hours on a road that climbs, drops and switchbacks the whole way. A week in Himachal that tries to cover four hill stations is a week mostly spent in a car. We would rather sell you two bases and real time in each.

The other honest note is snow. Guests book December and January expecting to walk out of the hotel into it, and some years that is exactly what happens — and some years Shimla stays brown until late January while Solang, an hour above Manali, is buried. If snow is the reason for the trip, go high, go in January or February, and treat anything you get lower down as a bonus.

Top Places to Visit in Himachal Pradesh

Himachal is four or five separate holidays sharing one state border. These are the areas we run, and what each one is actually good for.

The Raj hill station

Shimla & around

The easiest Himachal to reach and the gentlest to travel in. A pedestrian Mall Road, a walkable centre, and enough short excursions to fill three days without a long drive.

The Ridge & Mall RoadThe centre

The Ridge & Mall Road

A long open promenade at 2,200 m with Christ Church at one end and the Scandal Point junction at the other. No vehicles, which is exactly why it works.

  • Christ Church, 1857
  • Gaiety Theatre
  • Evening is the hour to walk it
KufriHalf day

Kufri

16 km out, at 2,700 m, and the closest reliable snow to Shimla in winter. Be blunt with yourself about the horse rides and the crowds — go early or not at all.

  • Himalayan Nature Park
  • Snow point in Jan–Feb
  • Best before 10 am
The toy trainUNESCO

The toy train

Kalka to Shimla, 96 km, 102 tunnels and 800-odd bridges on two-foot-six gauge. Slow in the best way. Do it one way and drive the other.

  • 5–6 hours
  • Book weeks ahead
  • Daylight run only

Snow, rivers and the tunnel

Kullu & Manali

The busiest corner of the state and the reason most people come. Manali is the base; the day trips out of it — Solang, the Atal Tunnel, Naggar, Manikaran — are what fill the itinerary.

Solang ValleyDay trip

Solang Valley

An hour up the valley. Paragliding and a ropeway through summer, and the snow everyone drives up for between December and March.

  • Paragliding & zorbing
  • Ropeway to Mount Phatru
  • Snow Dec–Mar
Atal Tunnel & SissuAll year

Atal Tunnel & Sissu

Nine kilometres under the Rohtang massif, opened in 2020, and it turned a seasonal pass into a ten-minute drive. Lahaul on the far side looks nothing like the Kullu valley.

  • No permit needed
  • Open year round
  • Sissu waterfall on the far side
Hadimba Devi TempleIn town

Hadimba Devi Temple

A four-tiered wooden pagoda from 1553 standing in a deodar grove at Dhungri, ten minutes above the Mall. Go at opening; by noon it is a queue.

  • Built 1553
  • Cedar forest setting
  • Open early morning

The Tibetan seat

Dharamshala & McLeod Ganj

Kangra valley, under the Dhauladhar wall. McLeod Ganj sits 500 m above Dharamshala proper and has been the Dalai Lama's residence since 1960 — a quieter, more particular kind of trip.

Tsuglagkhang complexMonastery

Tsuglagkhang complex

The Dalai Lama's temple, the Namgyal monastery and the Tibet Museum in one compound. Photography is restricted inside the prayer halls.

  • Namgyal Monastery
  • Tibet Museum
  • Morning prayers
Bhagsunag & TriundWalking

Bhagsunag & Triund

A short walk to the Bhagsu falls, or a proper nine-kilometre climb to the Triund ridge for the Dhauladhar face at eye level.

  • Triund is 4–5 h up
  • Start before 7 am
  • Carry water

Chamba's quiet side

Dalhousie & Khajjiar

Colonial-era Dalhousie spread over five hills, with Khajjiar's meadow twenty-odd kilometres away. The least crowded of the four areas, and the one that adds a full driving day to any itinerary.

KhajjiarMeadow

Khajjiar

A flat green saucer with a small lake, ringed by deodar. The 'Mini Switzerland' billing does it no favours; it is better than that description and best before the coaches arrive.

  • Khajji Nag temple
  • Paragliding in season
  • Go early
Dalhousie's mallsTown

Dalhousie's malls

Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, joined by two level walks around the hillside — Garam Sadak and Thandi Sadak, the warm road and the cold road, named for which one gets sun.

  • St John's Church, 1863
  • Panchpula
  • Flat, easy walking

Best Time to Visit

Climate & Seasons Guide

The main seasonMarch – June

Temp: 10–25°C · Sea:

Days in the low twenties, rhododendron in flower, everything open. Also when the whole of north India arrives: hotel rates double in May and June, and the Manali Mall Road is bumper to bumper by four in the afternoon.

Monsoon — book with your eyes openJuly – September

Temp: 15–25°C · Sea:

Green, cheap and empty, but the Himalayan monsoon brings landslides, and the Chandigarh–Manali highway does close for hours at a time. We will still run it; we will not promise a fixed arrival time.

The best weeks, quietlyOctober – November

Temp: 5–20°C · Sea:

Clear air, visible snow peaks, thin crowds and shoulder-season rates. If you do not specifically need snow, come now.

Snow seasonDecember – February

Temp: −4 to 12°C · Sea:

Cold, beautiful, and unpredictable. Rohtang is shut; the Atal Tunnel is not. Fresh falls close roads for a day or two at a time, so build slack into the last leg to the airport.

Travel Logistics

How You Reach Himachal Pradesh

01

By air

Chandigarh is the reliable one — full-size runway, flights from everywhere, and a road onward that runs in all weather. Bhuntar (for Manali) and Gaggal (for Dharamshala) are closer but small, and both cancel readily in cloud. We generally quote Chandigarh and drive.

02

By road from Delhi

Overnight Volvo coaches run Delhi–Shimla (about 8 h) and Delhi–Manali (12–14 h). Private cabs cost more and are worth it for a family. Either way the Kullu valley stretch is winding — sit in front if you are prone to car sickness.

03

By train

Broad gauge to Kalka overnight from Delhi, then the narrow gauge toy train up to Shimla. For Manali the nearest useful railhead is Chandigarh or Ambala, then road.

Know Before You Go

Essential Travel Guidelines

  • Halve whatever driving distance sounds reasonable to you. 250 km here is a full day, not three hours.
  • Rohtang Pass needs a permit and a rotating daily quota, and it is shut from roughly November to May. The Atal Tunnel needs nothing and is open all year — for most guests that is the better trip anyway.
  • Nobody can promise you snow on a given date. If it matters, travel in January or February and stay above 2,000 m.
  • Book Volvo seats and hotels well ahead for May, June and the New Year week. Those three windows sell out first.
  • Carry layers rather than one heavy coat. A Himachal day swings 15 degrees between noon on the Mall and eight in the evening.
  • Cash still matters in the smaller valleys. ATMs in Manali and Shimla are fine; beyond Manali, assume not.
  • If you get car sick, tell the driver on day one rather than on the third hairpin. They will pace it differently.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and it is our most-booked Himachal itinerary — but budget a full day for the drive between them, about 250 km and seven to eight hours. Five nights is the sensible minimum: two in Shimla, three in Manali. Anything shorter and you are mostly in the car.
