Lamiya Bay Beach

A beach made of coloured boulders, under Saddle Peak

Overview

About Lamiya Bay Beach

Lamiya Bay is not a sand beach and does not pretend to be. The shore is covered in smooth, rounded boulders in greys, browns, greens and reds, polished by the surf and stacked from the treeline to the water. Walking on it is slow and slightly absurd, and it looks like nowhere else in the Andamans.

It sits directly beneath Saddle Peak, and the trail to the summit starts from here, which means most people who see Lamiya Bay see it at six in the morning on the way up or at four in the afternoon on the way down. It is worth stopping properly either way.

Swimming is not on: the boulders continue underwater, the surf works against them, and there is nobody around. What the bay is good for is sitting, photographing and looking straight up at the forested mass of Saddle Peak behind you.

It is a short drive from Kalipur, so the standard North Andaman day pairs the two — turtles and hatchery at Kalipur, the boulders and the trailhead here.

Why people come here

  • Shoreline of smooth coloured boulders instead of sand
  • Trailhead for the Saddle Peak trek
  • Direct views up to the archipelago's highest point
  • Completely undeveloped and almost always empty
  • A short drive from Kalipur and Diglipur

Things to do

What to do here

Slow going

Walk the boulder shore

Rounded stones in a remarkable range of colours, stacked from the treeline to the water. Grippy footwear helps.

Dawn

Start the Saddle Peak trek

The summit trail begins here. Sign in at the park post and carry your permit.

Early or late

Photography

The boulders take colour best when wet and in low sun. Saddle Peak behind gives the frame its depth.

Getting there

How to reach

From Diglipur

About 20 minutes by auto or cab, past Kalipur.

With Kalipur

The two are minutes apart and are almost always done together.

Best time to visit · December to March, early morning

Dry-season mornings give firm footing and the best light. The shore is dangerous in heavy surf during the monsoon.

Good to know

Travel tips

  • Footwear with grip. Wet boulders are treacherous and ankles turn easily.
  • Do not swim here.
  • Carry water — there are no facilities of any kind.
  • Pair with Kalipur for a half-day in North Andaman.
