Kalapathar Beach

Black rock against green water, and the quietest sunrise on Havelock

Overview

About Kalapathar Beach

Kalapathar means black stone, and the name is literal: dark volcanic-looking rock outcrops sit along the sand and out into the shallows, and against water that runs aquamarine to deep green they make the most distinctive coastline on Havelock. It is a completely different beach from Radhanagar — narrower, wilder, backed by forest and mangrove rather than open woodland.

It faces east, which makes it the island's sunrise beach. At six in the morning there is usually nobody here at all, the water is glass, and the light coming up behind the rocks is the best photograph on the island. By mid-morning a handful of scooters have arrived and it is still quiet.

The drive out is part of it. The road from Havelock jetty runs about ten kilometres along the coast with the sea appearing through the trees, past small settlements and betel plantations, and it is the nicest twenty minutes of riding on the island.

Swimming is possible but this is not Radhanagar — the bottom is rocky in places, there are no lifeguards and the current can run. Most people wade, photograph and sit rather than swim properly.

Why people come here

  • Black rock formations against aquamarine water
  • Havelock's best sunrise, with almost nobody there
  • A beautiful coastal ride out from the jetty
  • Long, quiet stretches of sand with forest behind
  • Hammocks and beachside cafés at the accessible end

Things to do

What to do here

5:30 am

Sunrise

The reason to come. East-facing, empty at that hour, and the light on the black rock is exceptional.

Free

Walk the rock line

The outcrops run for a long stretch; walking south takes you well past anyone else on the beach.

Relaxed

Café time

Small shacks near the road end do coffee, coconut and simple food, several with hammocks in the shade.

Golden hour

Photography

The most photographed stretch on Havelock after Radhanagar, and the more interesting of the two compositionally.

Getting there

How to reach

From Havelock jetty

About 10 km on a good coastal road — 20 minutes by scooter or auto.

From Radhanagar

Roughly 20 km across the island; people commonly do Kalapathar at sunrise and Radhanagar at sunset on the same day.

By scooter

The most enjoyable option. Rentals are easy to find near the jetty and in Govind Nagar.

Best time to visit · November to April · dawn

Sunrise is the whole point. Midday is hot with limited shade, and the beach is at its least interesting in flat afternoon light.

Good to know

Travel tips

  • Set an alarm. Being here at 5:45 am and being here at 9 am are two entirely different experiences.
  • Footwear for the rocks — they are sharp and slick with algae at the waterline.
  • Do not swim out far. There are no lifeguards on this coast.
  • Fuel up in Govind Nagar before riding out; there is no pump at this end.
