Overview
About Bharatpur Beach
Bharatpur is the first thing you see on Neil Island and the easiest thing to do there. It sits immediately beside the jetty — you can walk from the ferry to the sand in under ten minutes — and it is a broad, sandy-bottomed lagoon with live coral gardens sitting just off the shore.
That combination is unusual and it is what makes the beach work. The bottom is sand rather than rock, so it is genuinely safe for children to walk out into; and the coral shelf is close enough that a glass-bottom boat covers it in twenty minutes. Families who would not attempt snorkelling anywhere else do it here.
It is Neil's water-sports beach as well. Jet skis, banana rides, speedboats and snorkel trips all run off the same stretch, and there is a small line of shacks doing coconut water, fried fish and cold drinks behind the sand. It is the busiest place on a very quiet island, which still means far fewer people than anywhere on Havelock.
Coral cover here has thinned with traffic and bleaching, so temper expectations — but for shallow, safe, low-effort reef viewing with the ferry a walk away, nothing in the islands beats it.
Why people come here
- Live coral gardens a short distance from the sand
- Sandy bottom and calm water — the safest swimming on Neil
- Glass-bottom boat rides over the reef
- Jet ski, banana boat and speedboat rides
- A ten-minute walk from the ferry jetty
Things to do
What to do here
Glass-bottom boat
Twenty to thirty minutes over the coral heads. The best value activity on the island and fine for anyone who will not get in the water.
Snorkelling
Vest, mask and a guide from the beach operators. The reef is close in and the water rarely deeper than a few metres.
Jet ski and banana rides
Run off the middle of the beach with an instructor. Cheaper than Havelock and less crowded.
Swim and laze
Sandy-bottomed shallows with shacks behind for shade and coconut water. Genuinely good with small children.
Getting there
How to reach
From Neil jetty
Walk it in ten minutes, or take an auto for a few rupees.
From Port Blair or Havelock
Ferry to Neil — roughly 1.5 hours from Port Blair and 45 minutes to an hour from Havelock by private catamaran.
Around the island
Bicycles and scooters rent cheaply near the jetty; Neil is flat and small enough to cycle end to end.
Best time to visit · November to April · morning
Visibility is best in the morning before the boats work the shallows, and low tide exposes more of the reef flat for walking. Water sports pause in rough monsoon weather.

Travel tips
- Reef shoes for walking the flats — there is dead coral rubble between the sand patches.
- Do not stand on coral, live or otherwise. It is protected and it does not grow back quickly.
- The glass-bottom boat is the best-value thing on the beach; agree the price before boarding.
- Neil's ATMs are unreliable — bring cash from Port Blair.
- This is the ideal beach to do on arrival day, before you have even reached your room.
