Baludera Beach

Baratang's own beach, and almost nobody on it

Overview

About Baludera Beach

Baludera is what Baratang has instead of a resort strip: a calm, shallow beach with a small landscaped park, a picnic shelter and a line of trees behind it, a few kilometres from the jetty. On most days there is nobody here but a family or two from the settlement.

The water is protected and shallow, and the sand is coarse and grey-gold rather than the white of Havelock. It is a pleasant place to swim and an excellent place to sit, but it is not a beach anybody travels to the Andamans specifically for.

Its value is practical. If you have made the decision to stay overnight at Baratang for Parrot Island — which is the right decision — then Baludera is what you do with the middle of the day between the caves in the morning and the boat at dusk.

There is a small children's play area and shade, which makes it a reasonable stop with a family on a long, hot travelling day.

Why people come here

  • Shallow, calm and safe water
  • Small park, picnic shelters and play area
  • Forest right behind the sand
  • Almost always empty
  • The obvious way to spend a Baratang afternoon
